Building Project

In culmination of our Matter Unit in Science the students were given the task of building a house that the Big Bad Wolf could not blow down.

They developed skills of working in a group and
they had a lot of fun.  There was planning, measuring, cooperating and just a little arguing going on.

Look how cute they are here measuring with a ruler.

My hair dryer was the Big Bad Wolf.

I should have taken a picture of my room while they were working on this project.  It looked like a trash can blew up in it.

How to work as a group

In an effort to help the children work together in a group we did a team building activity this week.
They had to build using spaghetti and marshmallows.
.

This was not an easy task.  The students struggled with each member of the team having a different
idea about the best way to build.

They worked on their cooperation and patience.
Something we all can use some help with.

I was very proud of them.  The discussion after the activity was as valuable as the activity itself.
However, building was way more fun.

Landforms

We completed our Landform Unit by building our own landform with dough.

We painted.

We labeled 8 landforms using our map key.

They are on display in the library if you would like
to stop by and see them.

How long is a teacher?

We started our measurement unit talking about non-standard measurement. If we measure using my foot or Chloe's foot you would get a different answer.

However if you measure using my foot or Ashlyn's foot you
would get the same answer.  LOL!!!

So how long is the teacher?

So the students realized we all need the same unit of measurement and we measured using 1 inch cubes.

Graphing Project

In Math this week we worked on a graphing project.

We formed 5 groups and each group decided what they want their graph topic to be.  We had What is your favorite candy?  What is your favorite holiday? What is your favorite kind of dog?  What is your favorite season?

The students first surveyed their classmates in order to collect data.  Then they used the IPad to create a graph and make a plan for creating their final product.

Working in a group takes a lot of cooperation.  These are some very strong learners and they all have their own way of doing the project.  The process of working in your group is as important as the actual project.

Check out our final products.
