Isn't our new school tee-shirt so cute?
Or maybe these girls just make it so cute.

These are for sale in the school office.

We will still be selling second grade class tee-shirts soon.

Seriously a Fire Drill

We had a fire drill today.
It was a beautiful morning so it was kinda fun to get to go outside.

This campaign is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of making activity a daily habit, ensuring our kids learn healthy habits at a young age and our schools have access to quality physical education programs

Plus we had fun.

Is toothpaste a solid or a liquid?

While investigating solids and liquids we did an experiment to determine if  toothpaste was a solid or a liquid.
They made a prediction.  Then we squeezed toothpaste into a jar of water.

The toothpaste appeared to dissolve in the water then the next day we could see the toothpaste had settled at the bottom.

Some of the children said it was a solid while some said it was a liquid.  After some investigating the students agreed to disagree.

Toothpaste acts like a solid and a liquid. It has characteristics of both because if you leave the tube cap off, the toothpaste does not flow out like liquid, it retains its shape and acts like a solid. When you squeeze the toothpaste tube, toothpaste flows out like a liquid.

We recorded our findings in our science journals.

Lovin' the IPad

We are loving the iPad.  This week we were working with patterns on a hundred chart.  We took a screen shot of a hundred's chart off the internet then used it on Doodle Buddies App and were able to make patterns on the hundred chart using our finger or stamps.  It was way fun.

Thank You

Thank you very much for the nice Birthday surprise.

We pigged out on Star Donuts first thing on a Friday Morning.

Chloe lost her tooth in the donut.  Thank goodness because she kept  grossing me out by wiggling it and showing me. LOL!

Rachael's Challenge Rally

Today was a beautiful Friday morning.  The whole school was able to go outside to a Rachael's Challenge Kick Off Rally.  There were skits about being kind, singing, cheering and hand waving.

Rachael's Challenge is a district wide program that encourages students to be kind to others and take the time to help others in need.

Do over everyone was not looking at the camera. However, in their defense the sun was in their eyes.

Keeping with the classroom theme of bumble bees we decorated our Rachael's Challenge hand to "Bee Kind."

Surveying the Class

Fourth Grade came to our class today and surveyed us about our favorite kind of drink.  They loved having the big kids ask them questions.  It is a good introduction to us starting our graphing unit in a few weeks.

Here McKenzie is interviewing Shelly on what drink she would like.  Choices included Lemon Rasberry and Chocolate Lime. Yum!

I think Alli was having a hard time deciding which flavor to pick.

These fourth graders decided to survey us as a class.

IPad Alert

Our class is getting a set of ipads just about every other day.  Today was the first day.  We used the Doodle Buddies App to  practice our spelling words.

And practiced math facts on a Soccer Game App.

Did I mention that they are teaching me how to navigate the ipad.

Second Grade Meterologist

This week we were meterologist.  We learned that a meterologist is a scientist who predicts the state of the weather.

We used a thermometer to determine the temperature outside.

We made a homemade weather vane that really worked.  We learned how to determine the direction of the wind.

We made pretend rain to see how a rain gauge works.

This next week we will actually be scientist and record our weather data on a calendar and discover change over time.

Fun Week

We had a very fun week playing games, reading, taking our first spelling test and writing stories but the thing we love the most is the playground.

I always think it is so funny how the first weeks of school the children start about 9am asking me when is recess.  After they learn the routine their asking tappers off but recess is always a favorite.

Mrs. Worden Speaks

If this week your child came home telling you about a story they heard where someone's ear was cut off, this is it.  Mrs. Worden, our reading teacher told the children a story about a time she was at an amusement park and she hurt her ear.  She talked to the children about talking their story out orally before writing it down and about making their story be true life experiences.

The children were all hooked as they lived the
excitement of her story.
I can't wait to see what kind of stories they write now.

Trading in Tickets

I am sure you all have heard about earning tickets for good behavior.

These girls paid tickets to get to have a small stuffed animal be at school with them all day.  We had a zoo at this table group.

These girls paid tickets to have their shoes off in class.

Earning tickets for good behavior is a great way to reward the positive and ignore the negative.
The kids love it and it works for me.

Go Fish

We played go fish twice this week.

Here Kyle and Elizabeth are playing tens go fish.  The two cards they match have to add up to 10.  They love it and it is an easy way to get them faster at simple addition to ten.

Here Marc and Grant are playing blends go fish.  This is fun game to help them learn the spelling rule for the week.

Whisper Phones

The students all have whisper phones in their desk.  They love to read but they really love to read with their whisper phones.  They talk very softly into the PVC pipe and they can hear only themselves speaking.  It is one of those great tricks that hooks them into reading.  Since they are listening to their own voices they stay focused on their reading and not distracted by others.
